A Baby's Laughter
Each time I hear a baby's laughter
I feel a tickle in my heart.
I have to stop and listen better
Catching each note of musical art.
Such innocent laugh in joy released,
A soothing balm for a wearied soul.
All earthly worries seem to ease,
A baby's laughter makes me whole.

1 A Lump Of Old Metal
It was a lump of old metal,
a car with no heart
cocooning him, purring
through back lanes,
down dark, cold streets,
warming him through
and he felt safe inside,
so that when, in December,
the car 'died' his body
shook with tears,
bitter, unrestrained tears
and I ached to see him like that,
on our last ride, so sad.
My sweet little boy
with his shirt hanging out
and his eyes, red and swollen
for a lump of old metal
that was our chariot of gold.

My Epitaph
Below the vault of this moon lit sky
Make a grave and let me lie
In joy I lived and in joy I die
And wish to see no one cry
This you carve on the grave I lie
"Here is some one, though a small fry
Had a heart as big as a mountain high
Who with songs of love, every heart did tie"

My Mother's Twin Lovers
‘I must get back to the men, ' my mother announces,
Then slyly meets my eye, as I choose, this time,
To avoid my usual reply. ‘I know what you're thinking! '
She's triumphant. ‘That there's only one of them! But
You're wrong, you know! ' My mother is having an affair.
She's cheating on my father with another man, who lives
With them, looks like his twin, and even shares his name.
‘I think they must be cousins, ' she explains, defiantly.
Before going to bed with my father, she slips next door,
Turns back the spare bed quilt, and leaves her slippers there,
So the other man won't suspect. She has doubled her marriage,
Two-timed adultery. After blameless years of barely moderation,
Let alone excess in anything, she now has a surplus of husbands.
It's as if in creating my father's double, she's conjured up her own
Wicked twin, denied a life ‘til now, when time is running short.
She has gained an extra husband, while the one I had is gone,
Which is fine, but now my elderly mother, with dementia,
Has a more exciting sex life than I do, kicking up her heels
While mine have been dragging. Perhaps it's time, I think,
As I take her home to her lovers, for me to get back to the men.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Even dementia has its funny moments. I was helping to care for my mother, who had Alzheimer's, and we often laughed about our differing views of the world. She had a persistent feeling that my father was two men: I was just getting back to the idea of dating after a very long marriage had suddenly come to an end. The twin themes of death/dementia and sex/dating are entwined in my book All That Lives, which this poem begins.

Even with the limitations in PH's new format, which makes some things more difficult (or impossible) to do now, I was able to swing back to the very beginning of a list of my Favorite Poems read on PH. That means from years ago, I think to 2012.
Wishing you all contentment. Be good girls and boys in 2021.

I am trying to get hang of this new format. found your showcase! Valsa's poem is beautiful as ever.
The 2nd and the 3rd poem look to be the one and the same, although I didn't have the time to read word for word.
The first poem, 'A Baby's Laughter' is heartening. The 5th poem, of Valerie Laws, is interesting and unique, very much as the title suggests. The 4th poem, of Valsa George, is truly brilliant, as always.
Poem Hunter is a great Site because of such great poets! I personally thank Bri Edwards for showcasing beautiful poems.
it will take me a bit of time to figure out the new format of Poem Hunter. Glad i found your page, Bri
I liked the first poem of baby's laughter penned by Cynthia and My Epitaph by Valsa. by
Hi Bri, Wishing you a happy New year. Happy to see your 2021 Jan poems.
Only 300 characters aren't enough to make a comprehensive comment on a poem o another comment. I hope the PH bosses will increase the limit up to 500.
