Durian Fruit - Poem by Dilantha Gunawardana

A noxious stench that feeds
A manic olfactory episode
A strange fruit that is held inside cane baskets
On the Colombo roadside
What draws house flies in swarms
And filters the foolhardy from the foolish
A bystander on a pavement loft
Saturated by a magical concoction of nectar
A ripe dressing that dissolves on the retina
To concentrate inborn desire
As the bravado of insatiability
Crushes open a spiky canon ball
For the lips to feast on the tender succulence
Of her taste-sodden morsels
As a lowly fruit that sensationalizes sentience
Transcends her bittersweet aura
Far beyond the edge of karmic insanity
