Essay On Psychiatrists

Rating: 3.9
I. Invocation

It‘s crazy to think one could describe them—
Calling on reason, fantasy, memory, eves and ears—
As though they were all alike any more

Than sweeps, opticians, poets or masseurs.
Moreover, they are for more than one reason
Difficult to speak of seriously and freely,
And I have never (even this is difficult to say

Very long poem. I can handle only a little at a time. I get that this is about psychiatrists and comparing them to various Classical Gods of literary folklore? Somewhat sensual through an erudite telescope?

Give me a break. That's not a poem; it's a drudgery.

I wonder if Pinsky ever heard of the value of brevity. If the poem were the telling of a story, I could read it with interest. But I prefer my lectures delivered by prose

A very long poem on psychiatrists is difficult to through as it is rather an essay to read!

Wow such a long poem. Love the broken flow of thoughts and dictation. The best part where he says not even about sanity (which means health, an impossible perfection) . How charmingly disarming. It makes you feel crazy and in need of a psychiatrist when you have finally finished reading it. Stream of consciousness is overwhelmingly present in this poem. It make me wonder about the mind of the author. I very much enjoyed reading these jumbled thoughts but would not recommend to the average person reading poetry. I wish I could criticize this poem which breaks every rule that I unnecessarily put on words, but it is too much of an irony and too hard for me to understand that I cant criticize it.

Amazing! The poet had that much patience to think so much and pen such a lengthy essay in lyrical form on the most dreaded subject. Hats off for the perseverance.10+++
