Face Value Poem by Tricia McCallum

Face Value

Face Value

John Wayne hated horses. Took a truck whenever he could.
Esther Williams hated water.
Couldn't wait to dry off after every shot.
Dr. Seuss was annoyed by children, their unpredictability.
Bet you Bieber hates his own music.
Whatever you think is true about anyone
turn it on its head then flip it again.
You'll be closer.

Next I'll be telling you Marilyn Monroe hated sex.
But I bet you a year of Hollywood's grosses
she did.

It gets worse:
The flawless model: photo shopped.
The philanthropist: cheats on his taxes.
The environmentalist cannot live without A/C.
The priest, I hate to say it,
the priest's no saint either.
And come on, no one throws it back
like the prohibitionist.

Make it easy:
Assume everyone is revealed
only through a prism.
Tease out a viewing angle
with the least distortion.
And even then.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
How much of what we know about people is real? True? It is a subject I visit often in my writing. We all wear masks from time to time, for self-protection if nothing else. How deceptive these masks can be is the subject here.

Interesting poem, Tricia. It gets even easier to wear a mask nowadays with social media. Is anyone genuine, do you think?

Fantastic. Exceptionally the open voice mused the bold song poetically. Brilliant. Specially I congratulate the poet because no one could finger it as a slogan, but it hits as a slogan with its extraordinary poetic talent. Thanks for sharing.

The philanthropist: cheats on his taxes. The environmentalist cannot live without A/C..... //.... Hypocrisy all the way. Everyone is driven by it within his or her range. Thanks.

What we perceive is different from what others see and the truth is always relative. People are multi-dimensional and complicated showing us different masks they wear to survive living in a difficult world. I enjoyed the theme of your poem. Thanks for sharing.

Your opinion about people is right. Everyone is wearing mask behind which the real face self is hiding. Deserves to be chosen as the poem of the day.10+++

tricia, i like this poem! and i just read your bartender one- i like it too. i like your plainspoken and accessible language, your crisp diction, great phrases (no one throws it back like the prohibitionist) , and what you say. i look forward to reading more of your stuff. a minor thing- check the definition of blank verse; i think you'll want to change the descriptor. glen kappy
