Handling The Matter - Poem by Tara McHale

If any situation got out of hand
would you simply understand?

Would you continue to gaze at me
through eyes that see
absolutely, in entirety,
just what it is that’s going on
for this slightly insanity-grabbed woman?

(Did I grab insanity
or did it choose to descend on me?)

Would you run to the hills, so close as they are,
or are the hills just outside the window, sufficiently far
to deprive you of the choice of not to run,
my you, your me, my only one?

And is a little distance
a little reminiscence
on both these sometimes clumsy parts
something which tears at wounded hearts
or enhances the flow,
rekindles the flow....

If any situation got out of hand
would you choose not to understand?
