Happy Diwali Poem by Reshma Ramesh

Happy Diwali

Rating: 3.6

The sky is bright with colors,
lights up like a lover's eyes,
stars watch them in delight,
the grand festival of lights.

Every house gleam with burning diyas,
small lamps light the doorways,
sweet aroma welcomes the loved ones,
Diwali the festival of lights

Sparklers in tiny hands, smiling faces,
rockets rushing up into the sky,
flower pots gushing out lights,
fiery wheels go round and round.

The smoke rises from little crackers,
finds its way into the lungs,
keeps my little one coughing all night,
his eyes is now not so bright.

The air heavily smoked tumbles down,
heavy with lead, zinc and nitrates,
the sky is choked, stars are teary eyed
Diwali the festival of the rich.

Lamps lit on the moonless Diwali night
signifies the end of darkness of ignorance
and the beginning of light that enlightens all
but on this bright night we burn like fools.

i have heard of a roman general who killed all its citizens an brought peace to the province. peace by desolation......u think on the same lines.....y pollute the air of happiness with cribbing of all that is sad and bad.........y negate or nullify the joy....each gain of yours is another man's loss....so will u stop being happy at your gains.............

I like the irony in this splendid poem. You begin with a lively description of the fireworks themselves 'lit up like a lover's eyes', then mention the personal problem of your child's lungs and finish with the words 'on this bright night we burn like fools.' It's great that you are using your poetic voice to make a stance against social inequity. love, Allie ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

dear resh, just co-relate diwali with the explosions in assam... how sad and valueless the lives of common men like the crackers you burn during diwali....

Diwali is surely a festival which brings joys to life of every human through its light however when the light gets converted into pollution which makes it hard for the other then this clearly reflects that the significance of Diwali is lost.
