Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda - A Love Song 14
Sakhi speechless, embarrassed and unaccompanied by Madhava returns alone. Radha is envious and imagines Madhava blissfully engaged in flirting with another maiden. Radha speaks to her Sakhi thus:
Ornamented with exquisite jewellery,
All set for a poignant game of love,
With wilted flowers tangled in the hair.
The young sensuous beauty,
More attractive than me
Rejoices with Hari!
Hari embraces the young Gopi,
With a pearl necklace,
That dangles playfully on her voluptuous breasts.
The young sensuous beauty,
More attractive than me
Rejoices with Hari!
The moon face filled with curly locks
Is languorous with kisses!
The young sensuous beauty,
More attractive than me
Rejoices with Hari!
Her cheeks touch the lilting earrings
While her girdle bells chime with rhythmic movement.

She giggles softly at his amorous glances
And mutters excitedly with glee!

With loves intense jollity,
She murmurs, trembles and sighs with half closed eyes.

Having attained mastery
In love's intricate ways,
She lies on his chest
Full of sweat and sweet weariness!

Through this poem of Jayadeva,
Of love and mirth unparalleled,
May Hari be pleased,
And in turn, put an end
To the troubled and turbulent times!
Radha and Krishna are vehicles (vibhava) for the universalisation of romantic emotion. Poet Jayadeva here mingles the aesthetic experience and the religious mysticism. This romantic play is not meant for itself. It has to be seen in the context of the Bhakti cult. He integrates also elements of older folk religious traditions like Tantra.
In twelve parts, the poet sings the love-relationship between Krishna and Radha - whereby the separation and the reunion towards the end, form the central theme.
This famed song of Geeta Govinda has been translated by me from Sanskrit to English.
I published this work in the form of a book in 2002. The second Edition was published in 2006 and later, the third edition came out in 2010.
I am now happy to publish it in Poem Hunter for the poetry lovers.
All set for a poignant game of love, ornamented with exquisite jewellery. We feel beauty, devotion and love in every line of expression. Amorous glances motivate mind with glee and hope. Attraction of devotion hums. Geeta Govinda is a lyrical expression of Jayadeva and this amazes mind of viewers. We find beauty of life in each line.
