Loneliness Once More Poem by Practicing Poetess

Loneliness Once More

Rating: 5.0

Loneliness, my old familiar friend,
Comes back uninvited when you are gone.
Feel empty, like I'm ripped apart,
After we were so close, as one.

Emotions pulled like taffy
In this all-or-nothing world
And I'm all by myself again,
After I got to be your girl.

A promising relationship
But the timing and circumstances are all wrong.
I have to watch you leave once more
And I wonder this time, for how long.

And I hear the refrain of an old, sad song
'So Far Away' by Carole King.
She captures us so perfectly,
I choke back tears, and start to sing.

Ah, yes, the one I was thinking of is Goodbye to Love. Some of the lyrics are: All the years of useless search Have finally reached an end Loneliness and empty days will be my only friend From this day love is forgotten I'll go on as best I can Do you know Karen Carpenter's life (and death) story? It's very sad: -(

I have all her songs on one of my youtube playlists, and have seen many videos and documentaries of their life. So sad that she sang so much about love, but in reality ended up with a miserable failed marriage from a man who only used her. Having gotten the idea as a child that she was fat, plus being so driven and performance/perfection oriented, she became anorexic and it eventually ate into her heart muscle, and she died unexpectedly. And all she ever wanted to be was a drummer, not a singer!

Oh dear... I'm sorry, PP. Your poem also brings to my mind a Karen Carpenter song. Is it Yesterday Once more?

I dearly love Karen Carpenter, and yes that is the title of one of her songs (Yesterday Once More) . But apart from both our titles ending with the words 'Once More', there is absolutely no resemblance whatsoever between her lovely romantic song and my sad poem. But don't be sorry. Just proves you have a mind for details... Or else you are also a big Karen Carpenter fan!

Early love can be a thing of joy, or it can also bring sadness as you adjust to time apart, when you wish that you could just be with them FOREVER. Not that we take them for granted later, but when love begins, you seem to never want it to end! Thanks for commenting, Becca!
