Pig War Poem by Richard Wlodarski

Pig War

Rating: 5.0

British Soldier: Hey, American farmer
The very Lyman Cutlar
You killed our large piggy
It was the sole property
Of Hudson's Bay Company

Cutlar: It ate potatoes in your garden
Because it was goddam starvin'

British Soldier: We British gonna arrest thee
Mr Cutlar goddam Yankee
Evict seventeen countrymen
Out of their goddam playpen
What do you think 'bout that, Cutlar?
You goddam Yankee pig killer

Cutlar: Oh yeah! Me and US Army
Gonna kick you out of country
Sixty-four soldiers under Pickett
Are going to take on your damn bet!

British warships sailing to island
San Juan Island off coast of Washington
Claimed by both America
And her neighbour Canada
British Admiral Robert Baynes
Sees the light and goes through great pains
Not to kill Lyman Cutlar
The damn Yankee pig killer
Refusing to attack
Have murder on his back
Over a goddam hog
He is not a war dog
The clear-headed leader
Clearly the better better

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Believe it or not, this is actually based on a true story! Sad that some bullies go to such extremes! History seems to be repeating itself. When will we ever learn?

A wonderful write! And yes history does repeat its self and it's all part of the learning project that we all are taking part in.

Many Thanks, Tom for believing it to be 'a wonderful write'. That 'learning project' is certainly part of life! But when will it teach us that God doesn't want us to obliterate all of mankind?

Some wars start for silly reasons and go on to destroy much more that nobody thought of.

So sadly the truth, Bharati!

Incredible, Richard! This poem should be included in Canadian social studies classes. You triggered memories of these events, The Pig Potato War, that happened right here in my 'neighbourhood' right around the time of the US Civil War. Such a magnificent verse, Richard.

That would be an incredible honour! And perhaps, it might bring some creative relief to some of those boring classes. Happy you enjoyed reading and commenting. Thanks so much, M.J.!
