Rathayatra (Festival Of Chariot) Poem by Bharati Nayak

Rathayatra (Festival Of Chariot)

Rating: 5.0

Rathayatra
(Festival of Chariot)

Happiness and tears
Come like waves
In my life
I have your picture hung
Before my tearful eyes.

Your two arms
Are extended
As if to pull me nearer
For an embrace
There is so much
Of love and tenderness.

I see you
Seated on a faraway throne
Ruling the whole universe.
In a fair play
Of shadow and light
Your face is
Visible sometimes
And sometimes looks hazy.

I see the marks of my tear
In your eyes
As my sadness gets
Reflected on your face.
My smile is mirrored
In your half smile and
in your flute sings my breath.

The tedious labor
Or the joyful walk of my daily life
Starts from you
And ends with you
And peace is there
At your feet.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Rathayatra or the festival of Chariot is a popular festival in Puri, Odisha. This is a ten day festival. On the first Day, the wooden idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and their sister Goddess Subhadra are seated on three different chariots and driven to their birth place (Shree Gundicha temple) .Rathayatra is a combined word.(Ratha+yatra) Ratha means chariot and Yatra means journey. My poem is symbolic of journey of mortal body.

My hearty thanks Rajnish Mangaji forb your great review of my poem.Odia culture is so intimately connected with the rituals of Jagannath temple and can be otherwise called Jagannath culture.Almost all Odia Hindu household must be having pictures of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra in their Puja room and worship them daily. They regard Lord Jagannath as their very dear and near relative to whom they can open their worries and ask for blessings.
