Sailing Through Our Eyes Poem by Glen Kappy

Sailing Through Our Eyes

Rating: 5.0

They set out on foot, our ancestors—
for necessity? adventure? who knows why? —
from southeast Africa north and over—
and imagine all the vistas
as they crested horizons one then another—
and surely hope was there and drove them
as they trudged and parted
through uncertainties and terror.

And later they set out in boats
over waters boundless to their eyes.
Were there specks of islands for their goals?
Stories of those before to brace them for their journeys?
And imagine all that filled their hearts
as their vessels rose and fell and rose again
on seas dark and sun-blind in their turns
as they sailed and paddled rolling and roiling water.

And now we sail with eyes through telescopes
for Goldilocks zones and planets—
this earth explored deplored
and hope in it so hard to find for some.
Talk of endless vistas! boundless oceans!
Dare we dream and dare to build and go?
Or this the time to make amends
so we may safely harbor in our ample home?

Man has journeyed through primitive life to the modern day in space ships, but now that the earth is much explored and deplored, will this journey anchor us safely? It is really a very urgent and pertinent question we must heed.

Thank you, Bharati! First I'm glad, as it appears, that I can respond to you beneath your comments—yay! This poem has a lot for its subtext, including a documentary I saw recently titled " Kiss the Ground, " which I heartily encourage if you can find access to it. It explains how, with healthy soil management, we can reverse global warming. Be and stay well. Glen

Belle, I see this comment of yours, and it looks like PH finally fixed it where I can respond right here. So thank you for caring to read and comment. I appreciate it. Perhaps you could divine I’m a person interested in origins. Specifically, I’ve spent hours pursuing what DNA tells us about them—fascinating! Be/stay well. -Glen

Good poem. Yah we behave as if we are abandoning earth.Instead of looking. Umm...my ego is swollen. You mentioned we came from mama Africa. Yeah true..then we abandoned it plundered enslave blah blah. So dont search fir deplorable human slackness in the cosmos its here on earth. Great poem and well understood
