Simple Words - Poem by Mariah Wilkinson

I’m sorry
For they way
My exaggerated half-truths
Took over and consumed
I’m sorry
That I ever hurt you
That I made you cry
That I made you doubt yourself
I’m sorry
For making you think
You had to choose
You won’t have to
You will always have
The very best of both
Giving all they can
To keep our wheels turning
Slowed, perhaps
By those behind
But turning all the same
As things are
So they will (not) remain
Unplanable futures
For excellence comes in many forms
“The truth is this
We find that what be-“
comes of us will never be known
But we will face it together
Free of doubts
Or impossible choices
I’m sorry
That you felt
Even for a moment
That you would lose
One of the two things
You could not care more about
Never again, I hope
Will you have to feel this way
On my life
For what that’s worth
It will never be my doing
I will never hurt you
My beloved friend
My dearest confidante
My trust
My truth
My protege
I’m sorry
I disappointed you
By my word
It will never
Happen again
