Singing With Willie Nelson

Rating: 5.0

I'd love to sing with Willie;
I know most every song,
and the parts that I'm not sure of,
well, I'd just hum along.

Please let me sing with Willie;
he shouldn't sing alone.
I could plug one nostril
to get his nasal tone.

I long to sing with Willie;
we're almost the same age.
We'd look about like brothers
together on that stage.

I yearn to sing with Willie;
my beard could be as big.
My hair I don't like long, though;
I'd need a braided wig.

I want to sing with Willie
since Waylon's not around,
so if you hear he needs a partner
please tell him one's been found!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I've always loved listening to Willie Nelson and would love to sing on the same stage with him (or George Strait or Don Williams) . I can carry a pretty good tune and know the words to many of Willie's songs (and George's and Don's) .

Donald Ray Williams passed away September 8,2017.He was a 2010 inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame. He began his solo career in 1971, singing popular ballads and amassing 17 number one country hits. He was still alive back when I wrote this poem.

My wife and I actually had front-row seats to a Willie Nelson concert once and I was hoping to get invited onstage. It didn't happen, but I was lucky enough to catch the last headband that Willie threw out into the audience. There was a barrier about waist high between the stage and the audience and my wife was standing there leaning against the barrier just looking up at the stage after Willie had already left. He came back, saw her there, looked around and saw one more headband he hadn't worn, picked it up and threw it directly to her. Some guy came rushing up and was going to snatch it away before she could catch it. I leaped to my feet and made a lunge for it myself. I went halfway over the barrier with my cowboy boots sticking straight up in the air, but I managed to get it before he did. (It is now in a frame at home with the handbill and the tickets to the concert.)

Hank says you are a good singer. Some people say that I am, too. We should get together and sing 'On The Road Again' and some of Willie's other songs.

I would actually LOVE to do that, Cowboy. My granddaughter and her family used to live in Durango where you are, but they have moved to Grand Junction. When I go out to visit her the next time, maybe you could drive up from Durango.

OK, so I HAVE seen this before, since I left a comment almost a year ago. I forget some things, but I loved reading the poet's notes again. Great story there, and great poem!

I have come across this excellent poem of you, dear Kim, and I must say that we are alike, writing poems, playing chess (you are brilliant, I am not) humming when not singing, and so much more, your poem is truly fantastic created so fantastically and with humor, but I cannot sing, LOL

Thanks, Cowboy. You seem to have disappeared lately. I hope you are still around and enjoying good health.
