Once I was an aquatic nymph
For long I hid myself under cover
None seemed to have spotted me
Not knowing, there existed another domain,
Of sunshine and of gentle breeze,
I confined myself in a nether world.
I don't know if I was happy myself then
Albeit, during my prolonged stay in water
Once I had an eerie sensation
And in my body happened a rare configuration
A pair of filmy wings sprouted on either side
That looked like thin strips of gossamer
They were so weightless for my body to bear
And on my head emerged a pair of bulging eyes
Perhaps a little incongruous for my tiny size
Feeling an insatiable urge to fly
Leaving the confines of that slushy pond
I rocketed myself into the far flung sky
Where I wandered proud and free
Like a little wisp of wonderment
It was indeed my second birth!
In my new found freedom,
I soared higher and still higher
Reeling round on iridescent wings
Hovering buoyant in mid air
I heard some children excitedly exclaim
'Dragonfly…. Dragonfly! Hurray! '
'Hush…! Don't scare it away
It might come and perch on our way
Let us chase it on this sunny day'
Birth of a dragonfly. A beautiful poem delivered. As children what an excitement it was chasing dragonflies. A beautiful reminder. Thank you.
Valsa, With beautiful verses you have turned words into a Dragonfly. Beautiful imagery... You just took me to childhood memories, we used to run behind butterflies, dragonflies especially on sunny days. Really enjoyed reading each lines right from its birth......
The poet has brilliantly captured the evolution of dragonfly in this soliloquy..
@Valsa George, Evolution of an 'aquatic nymph' into a dragonfly has been so nicely captured in this poetic soliloquy! I too have a poem titled 'Dragonfly', in which you commented: 'As children, dragonflies have been insects of endless curiosity and wonder to us! Catching them was my favourite pastime too. ' - I can see the reflection of this comment in your poem too.
In my new found freedom, I soared higher and still higher Reeling round on iridescent wings Hovering buoyant in mid air I heard some children excitedly exclaim.....love these lines. Beautiful poem with haunting expression. Thanks for sharing.
This is a poem of surprises, not only for us but for the main character. We experience these transformations and encounters in real time with her, which creates an unusual bond with a fictive character. I felt closer to the dragonfly than the children in the last section. I was afraid they might hurt my new friend, the lovely, delicate dragonfly.
A lovely imagery where an aquatic nymph is turning to a dragonfly and soaring up above the sky on it's large wings and enjoying the abundant beauty of nature with the eyes of a nymph.... loved it
A species's soliloquy presented in a very subtle manner..........Valsa.............an aquatic nymph transformed into a dragonfly charming children way by so sweet............a must 10
A beautiful reminder......dragonflies are a rare sight, nowadays, though we can still find them flying around in the monsoon time....All that's visible around my home is garbage, and those ugly flies, and blood-thirsty mosquitoes..! : -) This poem of yours, bought those memories to life...: -) Kudos! !

I would like to translate this poem
Like a spider making its filament of cobweb beauty you have spun the sketch here. It is nothing but the first hand experience of a dragon fly speaking very close to all of us about an evolution not much mused over. Thank you Valsa madam for posting this captivating poem of the kind. I give a sure 10 points for it.
