There he stood, never kissed a girl before
Not even made love, even with his eyes,
Now he stood guard in the trenches of war
While generals prepared their battlefield lies.
Over the top they had to go to fight
Valiantly walking in no man’s land
Hiding their inner fears and endless fright
Locked in combat, some fighting hand to hand.
The only sound they heard was shot and shell
And the mud sucking clay that held them back
Turning a living nightmare into hell
For courage was the thing they did not lack
Remember all those who fell with sorrow
For your today they gave up their tomorrow.
A great poem, no one should ever forget what we owe our war hero's went through.
You speak so eloquently for your grandfather and many other grandfathers. We owe them so much.
excellent work David. They take our young men (almost babies) and shove them into war (hell) they really have never lived yet some will die.
As a veteran of W. War 2 I greatly appreciate this stark and vivid portrayal of war. A great sonnet of tribute for all vets of all wars-thank you
This is a poignant verse, I understand the effort required to compose words about those pure spirits who merely battled to protect their land or obeyed the orders of those tyrants who were merciless and murderers of humanity.
This is a wonderful piece......thanks for sharing, dear poet....
A great poem that you have written here with such an easy flow of words from the heart. The casualties of war is never good. My salute to the soldiers that have risked their lives for our freedom. For without a fight no freedom can be gotten. For my today they gave up their tomorrow. Very inspiring and loved your write!
