After midnight, we finished making love
I asked if you were hungry
And you replied you could go for a glass of milk
We were alone in the house
And just before the dawn
We crept to the kitchen and opened
The fridge as we stood naked like virgins
On an album cover
You casually drank yr milk
And I, not sure what to have
Felt the coolness of the inside
As the glare of the lightbulb was
Too blinding to continue looking
I was still adjusting to my fashionable bob
After having long hair for so long
I closed the fridge door
As you rinse the last of the milk in the sink
We stared at each other--and laughed
Imagine if the kids were to come home
The symbolism and metaphors are fascinating and absolutely brilliant when seen through the eyes of war. Alex Colville was a war artist. In several war films, cows and/or soldiers drinking milk leave an indelible impression on the audience. As does 'the glare of the lightbulb'.
Superb poem, I suppose you mean we stared at each other instead of started again...We started at each other--and laughed...
4) LeeAnn, what happened to the 3 cats? I guess they got lost looking for the milk!
3) I'm sure a read a lot into this poem that may not really be there, but that's part of the fun of reading different meanings. An outstanding poem, LeeAnn. THX for stretching mine imagination!
2) I can easily visualize John Lennon and Yoko Ono on that infamous album cover. Both were staunch anti-war protestors.

I love Colville's art. Saw his exhibit at the AGO a few years back. You described that piece perfectly
