Vedas 10 - The Wisdom Of Upanishads Or Vedanta Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Vedas 10 - The Wisdom Of Upanishads Or Vedanta

Rating: 5.0

From the first verse of Upanishads,
To the last verse of the Upanishads,
The keynote of Vedic Hymns,
The essence of Vedic Hymns,
Essentially Monistic,
Emphasising only Monism,
Most beautifully expressed,
Most poetically sung!

It is only ignorance or lack of understanding
That points a finger at the Vedic philosophy
As polytheistic, of many Gods and Goddesses.
It is foolish to read anthropomorphic polytheism,
Followed by henotheism and monotheism in Vedas.
Gaudapada, a learned and famed philosopher,
In his treatise, rightly explains it as seeing
A bird with its footprints in the air or sky.

What began as personified forces of nature,
First became Gods, then, changed
To mere forms of one personal and transcendental God,
‘The custodian of the cosmic and moral order'!
Later, passed and became the immanent ‘Purusha'!
The Upanishads developed this ‘Purusha'
Into ‘Brahman' or ‘Atman', - the Supreme Reality,
Both immanent and transcendent!

The Vedic Sages were intellectuals,
Through their mystical experiences,
They developed deep spiritual insights,
They came face to face with Reality.
This intuitive, intensely spiritual insights
Translated as exquisite literature,
Tender yet profound poems of depth,
Tenacious songs of wisdom- The Upanishads or the Vedanta!

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Despite the subject being complex for the beginners, the poem goes on to deal with it in a finely nuanced yet interesting way as to how Vedic thought started taking shape through forces of nature and beyond. Unni, Indira and Susan have nicely described their impressions. Thanks, Geeta ji. 'The Vedic Sages.... Through their mystical experiences developed deep spiritual insights'

I cane to a halt upon reading- - -] explains it as seeing / A bird with its footprints in the air or sky.[- - - - - that is a show stopper! ! ! I reread it a couple of times and then continued reading the poem. Then returned to these lines and pondered it. The rest of the poem is done very well and discussed its point clearly. Well done Geeta! 10+

Thank you dear Susan for your gracious comment and vote as well. In Vedic texts, sometimes, there are similies and metaphors that is difficult to grasp or comprehend. But when we read it again and again, it becomes clear.

Hi Geeta, Indian philosophy is something very hard to decipher. Vedas and Upanishads and even our epics speak of many God. But, in the next breath, it is stated AHAM BRAHMASMI, meaning I am Brahman, that Man and God are one. This statement directs us to a monotheistic philosophy. This contradiction is answered by you in the poem. But, I think this deserves Mose elaborate discussion....
