Veteran Of The Psychic Wars Poem by Bryony Sheldon

Veteran Of The Psychic Wars

Rating: 5.0

Turn the knife and you will see
The truth behind the tragedy
Of pain.

Look into those tawny eyes;
They bewitch you and traumatise
Your brain.

Heavy breathing and lack of sleep,
The most evil demons will softly speak
To you.

Slice to ribbons the wasted years,
Carve your path that's oh so dear
And break through.

Sink the knife in, you will see
What the push towards insanity
Can tame

Victim of this bloody terror
I prayed to God but he never
Came

If you don't fight but still don't run,
All of a sudden it'll become
So clear:

Don't you know that Hell is empty
Because all the devils are already
Here?

Look into these haunted eyes;
Someone come and stabilize
Your soul.

Grip the cord and cut it clean-
Do whatever to achieve
Your goal.

Shaking hands and nausea,
Remove from me the cause of the
Pain.

Twist the knife and look at me,
I beg for this lobotomy;
I'm insane.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My grandfather became an alcoholic to try and help him live with PTSD. After recently suffering from the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal he has been asking for euthanasia, as he is "probably going to die soon anyway".
This poem was based off of some advice that he gave me.
Was originally going to be called "Depression", however my grandfather is worth more than just one word.

EDIT: [26/03/19]

5th and 6th stanzas were originally this:

I don't know but I've been told
That this facade is getting old
And frail

A thousand boots marching down
And holding hands with the sound of
Chain mail

I normally never change the contents of my poem, however the original stanzas were part of my "demo" draft of the poem; I just noticed that I uploaded the wrong version of the poem.

2 – Some will say God answered but 'you' weren't listening. i think " God" is a useful tool for some (sometimes for 'good', sometimes 'evil', depending on one's outlook. i just don't believe God exists. bri :)

Your reviews are always so lovely to read, thank you for putting this much effort into discussing poets' work- I'm sure I'm not the only person who appreciates and values it. Have a wonderful day, and I wish you luck to your future.

1 – " Because all the devils are already Here? " i think most of them relocated to my neighborhood. i'm glad you didn't use Depression (see Poet's Notes) . there are two very different definitions for " chain mail" , but one of them is also spelled chainmail.
