We stop visiting graves
In mind or real,
And wonder where
The years went.
We were there in emergencies
But never in the calm,
And wonder where
The years went.
We indulged our deadlines
But rarely our loves,
And wonder where
The years went.
We took for granted
Those that cherished us,
And wonder where
The years went.
We miss them now
The annoying, admonished,
And wonder where
The years went.
We sit alone, all alone
In confronting silence,
And ponder where
The years went.
We hold the thoughts
That we kept unspoken,
And wonder where
The years went.
We hear the rain,
Time drains away,
And realise then
The years' spent.

Time stealthily moves on without any ado and we hardly realize that it slips by! But after long years when we look back, we realize with a jolt that much water has flown under! ! A great write! !
i'll add this one to my poemlist danny. but i can't say i wonder or ponder where the years went, as i KNOW where they went! i may think about them and i DO sometimes wish i could go back to my usually carefree childhood............ as long as i didn't have to go through adulthood AGAIN! i also sometimes wish i could have my parents back, one at a time, just for an evening or afternoon or two to ask them some questions i never thought to ask while they were alive. in the last line: The years' spent. something doesn't seem 'right' about YEARS'. is that the way you wrote it or did poemhunter add an apostrophe? i notice they sometimes do change things a tiny bit when i submit something. thanks for sharing. bri
I'll come back to this one and read it from time to time as I grow older. It's great.
sharp irony in blunt yet soft words..........................very nicely put in to words...

Wistful and poignant - the years pass so quickly, we wonder where they went.
