Ayyappan 13 - Hariharaputra - The Amazing Baby Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Ayyappan 13 - Hariharaputra - The Amazing Baby

Rating: 5.0

Vishnu returns
To Siva
After having accomplished
His work very successfully.

Did you know Gods are curious too?
Siva is very curious to know
How he managed to kill
The wicked Asura!

Vishnu, instead of elaborating
About how he managed the situation,
Changes his form to become
A Mohini, once again!

This change of form
Into an enchanting beauty,
Caused a stormy turn of events,
That rocked both heaven and earth.

When Siva saw the mesmerizing Mohini
Standing right in front of him,
Siva falls in love with Mohini, instantly.
Unable to resist, he embraced her tightly.

Of their loving union was
Born Hariharaputra -
The son of Vishnu and Siva,
Thelight born of beauty and bliss!

Hariharaputra came to be
Hailed as Sri Ayyappan,
By thousands of His ardent worshippers,
Beyond gender, cast, religion and man-made barriers.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Poem in Prose format.
A performance, a memory, a biography,
An experience as a dancer.
This is an extract from my book
"Mohiniattam -The Dance of the Enchantress"
Part 2 -The Choreographies entitled "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa".
This prose poem is an edited version

Lord Ayyappan is a popular deity of Kerala, worshipped by countless devotees in South India.
According to the Puranas, Lord Ayyappa is none other than Hariharaputra, the son of Hari and Hara. Hari is Lord Vishnu while Hara is Lord Shiva. Hence, Hariharaputra is a powerful combination of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, the indweller and inner ruler of all hearts, the timeless and space less ‘Taraka Brahman', before whom thousands of devotees prostrate with the ardent cry of"Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa".

(2) He- Harihara Putra Lord Ayyappan- symbolises the synthesis or the unity of two streams of thought- Vaishnavait and Shaivait. This fine work of literature comes out of your spiritual contemplation, scriptural studies plus your training and research as a Classical Danseuse. Thank you, Geeta ji, for making us familiar with our own diverse culture. Of their loving union was / Born Hariharaputra - The son of Vishnu and Siva / Thelight born of beauty and bliss!

(1) The story about how Sri Ayyappan whom we worship as Lord Ayyappan came into being is both interesting as well as socially very very significant. Besides Brahama (or Brahaman) , the creator of the universe, Shiva and Vishnu are the two most powerful Gods, as per ancient Hindu thought, and have their own devotional following who rate their God superior to the other. It is here that the significance of Lord Ayyappan comes into play.
