Blinkers Poem by Alf Hutchison

Blinkers

Rating: 5.0

Edmund Burke wrote “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”.I wrote this in response to some comments on my poem 'African Pirates'

Though we turn the other cheek,
Let it never make us weak,
For the blinkers that we wear,
Are the testimonies we bear.

See man’s inhumanity to man,
Then expose them while you can.
Are you righteous or a sinner?
Let not evil be the winner.

Most today have tunnel vision,
‘Involve me not’, their firm decision,
‘It’s not my fault, I do not care’
‘I’m not thieving silverware’

Please do not let evil prevail,
From your eyes now take the veil,
Stand your ground and boldly fight,
Fight against evil… with all your might.

Though we may ask the world to fight against evil, though we may complain that the world is not interested in their involvement to get rid of evil, the problem with the world is that it has got its own ways of involvement. The truth is that what may seem to be evil to you need not be an evil to me. The definitions are relative. Secondly, even though I know for sure that something is evil, I am afraid of getting involved for obvious reasons. I am afraid of my mortal existence if I stand against evil. We hear so many stories from many spheres of life. How far can I go is purely an individual angle. Nobody can force me. The world keeps this view. We can't blame the world for not getting involved against getting rid of evil. Thirdly, deep in our hearts we are aware of the fact that the system knows how to take care of itself - how to repair itself. This means that the system will not totally get destroyed. There will be people and organisations around us to take care of the repair work. If Mr X is not getting involved, surely, there will be one Mr Y. This is a fact. Every man has a good soul within him and we all reflect the goodness of it now and then in our own way. Perhaps, there won't be enough sustenance. If we can develope sustenance, then the world would be more or less stable in the idea of goodness. For this, we should have conviction in the power of goodness. We are still skeptical about god and the qualities like honesty, truth, love, kindness etc of man. Skepticism won't work.

About Edmund Burke's words, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” We do know very well that the quotation is misleading, and such a quotation we must strongly disagree. The evil in this world must be brought to a halt, we should be in a common stand against it and not to allow it prevail.

Alf, I cannot fault your writing this a superbly written poem, and I will certainly stand besides you to conquer evil. However evil committed today is not always reported, both sides of many stories are not shown by the media. And the Blinkers may be mistakenly worn by those who think they are right. Regards Bob

One of the biggest problems of the modern world is so well reflected here... People tend to let terrible things happen instead of fighting for peace and harmony...Thanks for sharing this motivational piece, Alf. Best wishes.Yelena M.

This is so approrpreate for so many situations the are on the rise today. It's unbelievable how many will just stand back and let things happen when something could of and should of been stopped.

A truer word has never been said, dont get involved because it might affect the profits. Tango.

A compelling cry for personal involvement and responsibility that has the potential to make us all better. Excellently expressed Alf!

Alf this poem needs to be circulated across the world..it truly reflects the apathy of most people who feel comfortable wearing blinkers and pretending that the evil of others is not their concern...A very effective write with perfect rhyming..10++++
