Come Young Pirates, Features As Fair As Island Air (39)

Rating: 5.0

To Mount Teide the Guanches prayed
and quelled its fiery mouth
for they well knew its lava slew
all that fell in its path.
Little is known and their lineage sown
shadowed in mystery,
from tropic land to tepid sand
they ventured out to sea.
Of Mauritanians it was claimed,
spoke with tranquil grace,
perhaps the Guanches descended
from this beloved race.
Their smile charmed Tenerife Isle
with traits that set them apart;
honor, virtue and courage; but true
devotion ruled their heart.
Proud, with a noble demeanor,
skilled, athletically blessed,
features as fair as island air
beautified each giving breath.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Come Young Pirates, is a series of adventure and descriptive sea poems. In this segment, the Captain is describing the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands. The Guanches were believed to have migrated from North Africa, but their origins are still in dispute. Tenerife Island is one of the Canary Islands. From tropic land to tepid sand...I feel it as the kernel of this part...in its entirety, it's a great series dear captain of the sea! !

Wonderfully crafted while freely so with double rhymes and finely honed alliteration. Much to learn from the depictions of inhabitants and surroundings, history through poetry come to life. The notes, welcome as usual, betoken the scope of the whole. Much to enjoy in these epic episodes!
