Defining Love Poem by Practicing Poetess

Defining Love

Rating: 5.0

Not animal magnetism,
Not lust, or arousal
Much more than chemistry,
A commitment's what love should be.

It's more than a feeling
Love is an action word
Love isn't just a noun; it's a verb

If I say 'I love you',
It's what I do.
It's more than desire that I feel for you.

More than mere affection,
'Cause feelings come and go.
Love gives, undeservedly
It's what we choose to show.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I remember being taught, long ago, that we develop love for a pet as we feed and care for its needs.
As we demonstrate the actions first, the feelings will follow.
That's the essence of real love.

it's easy for the mind to use the words - I love you, but if it is not the heart speaking then it is not love but just words spoken and you expressed the definition quite well.

Easy to feel some stirred-up emotions. Easy to say those 3 little words. Much more difficult to follow through with showing love when the other person is being difficult or beastly. But that's the test of true love. Thank you, Louis, for your own poem 'Inseparable' gave me food for thought to write this one! : -)

I really like the line, 'Love isn't just a noun; it's a verb'. It sums up what love should be. A tender poem.

Thanks, Carl, for understanding! It sounds so unromantic, boring, and dutiful to do and show love, i know, but it really works- - If you serve someone and show them acts of kindness, it truly causes the feelings to increase! Best aphrodisiac in the world! : -)
