Elegy: A Dead Public Pond Poem by Dr Dillip K Swain

Elegy: A Dead Public Pond

Rating: 3.9

By the unremitting blaze of sun,
her tank was shrunk, bed dried up.
No water, no moss left except some
patchy cracks of mud here and there.
The heavy rain surged into her pool,
came too late but made her cool.
Alas! They were wittingly dwindled
and some sailed through the air
in invisible vapors in joyous choir!

She's lamenting for she will miss
the footfalls of thousand known feet
of women, men and school children
to dive into the pool semi-necked,
to explore refreshed vigor in them
in unique pleasure, undefined ecstasy
she will no more be revived for farmers
to drain water to their emerald fields!

Lotus will no more bloom forever
on the crystal surface of her water
In deep pain, her tearful eyes peep
The huge loads of sands in some trucks
The upbeat contractor is cheering labors
To end the task to fill it up by the dusk
Ah, none left to see her spirit cry in air
No one bothers to listen to her and share!

Government contractor on high back chair
growing fatter through a dazzling tower
on the shrine of committal as her tomb.
Her spirit is sweeping her blooded tears
and cajoling her to stop lamenting there.
The seeds of her tears will now bloom
seasonal flowers of varied colors
as offering to commercial quarters!

This is the cry of the day. The way man-made ponds are destroyed amidst urban jungle, such is the greed of land mafia and real estate contractors and the conniving city fathers. I agree with the sentiments.

The plight of a public pond drained and destroyed by sand mafia and public contractors is poignantly pictured here. Once it was a collection of crystal clear waters in whose coolness, children and elders dived and splashed. Now it is lying almost dry with a some stagnant dirty water beneath. No lotus flowers bloom over its surface. The pond wants some immediate intervention to sustain her weak existence. But her lament falls in dead ears! A great poem that deserves high rating!

Greedy men have no concern to preserve it which has been serving generations as a public pond. In this season of sweltering heat, when rivers and ponds get naturally dry and people thirst for a drop of clean water to drink or a pool of water to swim and bathe, it is a crime filling up a pond. Excellently crafted.

Let me once more visit this poem. Once the pond was overflowing and had been the haunt of village folks, men, women and children. They bathed in its pure waters. Now it is almost dry. Soon it will be filled up to erect a high rise tower.
