I was sitting beside my ailing mother's hospital bed
On the thirty first night,
Unaware that some celebrations were a common ritual
On this night.
As for me, it was all prayers to the Almighty,
For the comfort of my mother, who couldn't recognize who I was,
Yet kept on talking to me as a stranger,
Or God knows who she took me for.
.
She is ninety years old now.
Lost her memory and cognitive power
Slowly and completely about two years back.
At zero hours, Twenty Twenty One,
As I was listening to the incoherent utterances of my mother
With rapt attention,
Lest she would feel sorry for the absence of a listener
To her garrulous, unending reminiscences,
Suddenly I heard the roars of jubilant people
And the sound of crackers and fireworks outside the window.
I realized, while life can be sad and somber for some,
It can be fun too for many.
I held my mother's hand,
And softly whispered to her, a ‘Comfortable New Year,2021'!
At ‘Doctor's Clinic', Rangpur
O1 January 2021, past midnight
I realized, while life can be sad and somber for some, It can be fun too for many. So true, I hope speedy recovery for your dear Mother, Khairul Sir. Fascinating poem so wisely rendered
A totally good way to greet the new year with your Mother's hand in yours. Blessings on you and your Mother. My Father also had Alzheimer's-- there are good memories still to be had. Trust me
