Leaving The Lights Of Vegas Poem by Susan Williams

Leaving The Lights Of Vegas

Rating: 5.0

.
My friends dream of driving a red red convertible
down the bright and brassy streets of Las Vegas
driving through all its cheap glitz and sparkling sequins
and all its loud lights and its golden glitter.
.
My friends want to play dress-up to match its garish flash
and gamble in the middle of its fake razzle and dazzle
They want me to join them and the circus
that is going on in cheap tinsel town.
.
But I have other dreams that I dream
in the midst of my long and lonely nights
I dream of driving to a different time
and a different place.
.
It isn't marked on a map but I know it exists somewhere
People live there in Thomas Kincaid cottages by the sea
and they walk the sandy beaches and they play in the surf
and they wave happy to see me.
.
I leave the car forever behind me and go barefoot through the soft and soothing sandpiper dunes
and build a sand castle while in the distance
a man comes strolling down the beach.
.
I shade my eyes from the sunlight
and watch the man coming toward me
coming through the waves lapping on the beach
coming from the horizon where heaven meets the earth.
.
.

I really like this. The beach is better than Vegas any day. Five stars!

This is magnificent, Susan. This verse could only come from someone who has reached the point of realization....that stuff hinders and does not help experiencing life. This goes to myfavourites.

I think the similarity of our life views is the basis of our long-term friendship. We do seem to look at life not the glitz, the heart and soul, and not the exalted fad. Thank you for reading me, M.J.

My 3rd attempt at responding. Vegas= souls in need of redemption. Kincaid cottages= souls at peace. The man is Jesus. Take it or leave it...that's my take.e

Richard, I like your thoughts on this piece--especially on Christ Jesus walking on the beach gathering souls... I give YOU top marks! ! !

An original and prestigious poem that makes the reader feel Susan's poetic different from others. She lives in her beautiful world the world of dreams, spirit and imagination, a world partly connected to people, and thus the poet can be distinguished and write herself, Well done and thank you
