My Protector - Poem by Justina Coleman

He's coming again
Coming to hurt me
I would run and hide
But how to hide from what you can't see.

I cry and I run
The salty tears burn the broken skin
Why won't he leave me alone?
Why does he want to hurt me again?

He's torn apart my soul
And he's broken my spirit
There's nothing left of me
Why doesn't he realize it?

Because of him I am broken
Broken beyond repair
My once expressive eyes
Now hold only a vacant stare.

Strong arms wrap around me
I'm pulled against someone's chest
One hand covers my mouth
The other arm wrapped just below my breasts.

You whisper softly in my ear
And I begin to calm
It is you
The one that shields me from harm.

I begin to cry anew
As I lay my head against your chest
I'm thankful you've appeared
This night I've been blessed.

You lift me up gently
And you step into the light.
To the one one who hurt me you say 'Be gone.'
And my demons disappear into the night.

Now we lay together
My ear pressed above your heart
Your strong arms wrapped around me
Protecting me from the night.
