When ‘Nartaki' stamps her feet
It needs to be soft and gentle
A step neither too loud nor harsh
Dare she startle Nature in her tranquil repose
Or hurt Mother Earth's generous bosom?
Every dancing step is a balance
The alignment of the body and mind
Like the delicate balance of the dance poses!
The rhythmic measure of dance
With intricate ‘Taalas',
The hands and legs moving swiftly,
The body flitting across the stage
With leaps and jumps,
Like a gentle doe skipping amidst green foliage,
Accurate -not too early or too late
On time -on dot - mathematical precision of ‘Laya'!
The limbs stretched yet curved at varied angles,
Sometimes raised or at times lowered,
Are like angel's wings held with poise,
Gently moving,
Blending with harmony!
Holding a ‘Mudra' like a ‘Champak' in bloom,
Of gleaming golden yellow hue
Fragrant, sweet and soothing!
Great demonstration....loved this elegant piece... artistic
How the dances 'Nartaki' is going on is so touchingly and hauntingly expressed by you in this poem. I cite... When ‘Nartaki' stamps her feet It needs to be soft and gentle Gently moving, Blending with harmony! Holding a ‘Mudra' like a ‘Champak' in bloom, Of gleaming golden yellow hue Fragrant, sweet and soothing! Beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing.
(2) To explain the intricacies of a classical dance, you have picked up the perfect word in order to convey the perfect aesthetic beauty of the ensemble. No words can adequately express the pleasure that the reader derives from reading this poem. Many many thanks, Geeta ji.
(1) Right from the entry of a 'Nartaki' or Danseuse on stage, her dancing skills are on display through the movements of her body which have a wordless language of their own conforming precisely to 'Rasa' 'Taala' and 'Laya' as defined in classical literature. It's 'like angel's wings held with poise.... a ‘Mudra' like a ‘Champak' in bloom'.
Another sensational poetic trip to the art of Indian dancing!

Hi, The classical dance forms demand complete synchronicity of body and soul of the dancer and her expression, the Nartaki, with the music, it’s taala, Laya and lyrical meaning, with mathematical precision. And perfect sync among the dancers too. Excellently narrated. Enjoyed the poem. And the lovely pic you have posted to demonstrate. Obliged.
Unni, i am happy you enjoyed reading this poem. God bless.
