Rescue Dog Poem by Brian Mayo

Rescue Dog

Rating: 5.0

Sleep well tonight, my little friend
Your tragic years are at an end
Those worry-lines around your eyes
Shall be erased by happy cries.

Sleep well tonight, my little pup
We're going to get you all fixed-up
I've got a place with lots of sun
Where clover blooms and rabbits run.

Sleep well tonight, my little dog
Adventures lay in hollow logs
A shallow creek in which to play
Will help to keep your thirst at bay.

Sleep well tonight, my little friend
I vow, on me you can depend
A new life waits for when you wake
A happy home for us to make.

Love this one. Nice structure, rhythm, use of repetition... and of course the story pulls at my heartstrings and the images are lovely. We need to rescue more pups! Nice Brian.

Wow what a fabulous poem in rhyme n flow to an adopted perhaps stray puppy. Worded superbly and professionally. One of the best poems I have read today. ESP loved the creatively thought up logs stanza. Kudos. Great to read from u again. Pls do comment my latest poem here, titled Pickled Scenery

Great poem, Brian. I have voted it a ten. Reminded me of one of my favorite songs, Old Shep, which was one of the first songs Elvis sang in public. It went something like this: Well, when I was a lad, Old Shep was a pup. O'er hills and valleys we'd stray. Just a boy and his dog, We were both full of fun. We grew up together that way. I remember the time at the old swimming hole When I would have drowned beyond doubt, But Old Shep was right there; to the rescue he came. He jumped in and helped pull me out. (There is a little bit more, about how Old Shep needs to be put down, but the owner just can't do it, but I don't remember the exact wording on that part.) Then the last verse goes like this: Now Old Shep has gone where the good doggies go; No more with Old Shep will I roam, But if dogs have a heaven, there's one thing I know: Old Shep has a wonderful home!

How kind, how sweet, how nice There is no greater love to blend, Than with a rescued loyal friend. I know, I had three best friends. This poem made me cry. Beautiful and very open and tender thoughts, Brian, Thank you

Good to see you posting again, Brian. A wonderful piece that is fun to read, and as Pamela said, pulls at my heartstrings. There are no more appreciative pets than adopted dogs
