She's Mad - Poem by Lara W.A

One bright, sunny day.
It was last year,
I remember vividly.
A few months before the Tsunami attacked,
A few months before the Earth’s population tremendously reduced.

Hair uncombed,
Worn-out sandals,
Faded jeans,
That same sling bag,
A confused expression,
And plenty of attitude.
(Chewing bubblegum like a pro) .

That was me,
Wearing a new personality,
Looking like an ignorant rock star.
I could easily pass off as a member of The Strokes,
Except maybe,
I’m better looking and much cleaner.
(Self-confidence is never a bad thing) .

Killing time,
And wasting my life.
No slight guilt at all.
Breaking the wrongness,
Barb turned to me and said:
“I have a question for you.”
(Not taking her seriously) .
“Why did you stop dressing up? ”

She got me thinking hard.
Where did my fancy earrings go?
And did somebody steal my merry hair clips?
No more constantly changing bags,
No more colorful footwear,
All gone without a trace.

Choosing my words real carefully,
I opted for a softer tone;
“See, Barb;
One day, you’re gonna wake up,
And realize that looking good,
Isn’t the most important thing in the world.
There are people who cannot even wear shoes;
They have no legs.”

I don’t quite remember the ending,
Or how she responded to that.
But I’m pretty sure she went home that evening,
With a changed perception of me.
And I bet this did cross her mind,
Before she went to bed that night:
“That girl is a lot madder than I thought.”
