The Day Is No River With Flowing Water Poem by Nosheen Irfan

The Day Is No River With Flowing Water

Rating: 5.0

A long summer day
Burning in sun's malice
Quiet, suppressed air
Bereft of breezy songs
No whisper comes from trees
No murmur from rivers
Empty as a beggar's face
Resigned to life's injustice
A day with its doors shut
And its curtains closed
Keeping all the treasures locked
No glimpse offered to the soul
The day is no river with flowing waters.

Fortunately for us, the blistering heat of the sun is mitigated by occasional showers.....! What a relief! Before rains, this has been exactly the same situation here too! A well crafted poem on summer!

Very often an author will evoke the imagery of a river of life. For some reason, there is a tendency to forget that existence can be the dry, static, perhaps even uninviting desert. It need not be a permanent state of being, but it may be a reality for a period of time. Magnificent, Nosheen. A 10.

I saw a beggar today with that empty face. That far-away look in his eyes, I wonder how much such a day is amplified by our own despair and longing. Our awareness may be born of frustration and disappointment. All doors are shut and curtains closed and at such times no search for light or refuge make sense only an acceptance.Your words are no assembly of metaphors meant to evoke a feeling for those are the mere bones. The essence of your writing is the dusty marrow........superb.

Such an interesting juxtaposition in the title and the last line. No River With Flowing Water. This makes me think of a hot humid sweltering day with no release. The mood you've created in this poem is stagnant, stressful, yet beautiful at the same time...like being trapped in a room without a door. A philosophical conundrum. Wonderful.

The day is no river with flowing waters. A hot summer day nicely painted. Life is also like the days of various seasons.

WOW! This is h-e-a-t at its most uncompromising intensity. I felt a profound lassitude as I read your metaphors of such extreme heat. I can believe you'd feel it as THE SUN'S MALICE, and place it among LIFE'S INJUSTICES, and see it as alien to the SOUL. I know this malice of nature in brutalizing us, but for me it is WINTER not summer. when the temperature can reach - 35 degrees F. with a WIND CHILL factor of - 45 degrees F. You could die in 30 minutes exposed to such cold! ! And piles of snow and fields of ice. So in a curious way your poem's summer in Pakistan still strikes me as a paradise compared to winter in Minnesota. What an amazing planet! What amazing people on it!

A state of Summer both inside and outside is so deftly expressed in this beautiful poem.To quote a few lines- - A long summer day Burning in sun's malice Quiet, suppressed air Bereft of breezy songs No whisper comes from trees No murmur from rivers Empty as a beggar's face Resigned to life's injustice

the expressionless day and its image perfectly displayed in this poem. it is better that this day is no river with flowing water just because of summer.. and what should do a beggar! ! very nicely penned
