I heard a really good cowboy song today.
It was "The Last Cowboy Song"
and was sung by Ed Bruce
and Willie Nelson.
It was so good that I went and found a video
of the song on YouTube. The video
was even better than I expected
and I highly recommend it.
So I got to thinking: I wonder if I am the last
cowboy? Is Smoky Hoss a real cowboy
like me, or is that just a handle
he has put on himself?
I consider Smoky a very good friend of mine.
I know that he knows who Waddie
Mitchell and Buster Black are.
He knows the West.
So I say, Smoky, you're one of us! Maybe you
and I are the last two cowboys! I'm
getting up there in years and so
you may soon be the last!
When I'm gone, you better come to Durango
for my funeral. Bring your guitar if
you can sing, or make sure they
play "The Last Cowboy Song".
A beautifully penned poetry if expectation and desires respecting everyone's rights. So very well penned.

I have seen that video and it is wonderful! The pictures that they show of the old West had me in tears at times as I listened to the music. Your poem is VERY fine, as well. Full marks!
Smoky, Ed Bruce was the co-star of the TV show " Bret Maverick" with James Garner during the 1980-81 season. I didn't know that. I looked it up. Another thing I didn't know: He wrote the hit song " Mama, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys" that was a big hit for Willie Nelson.
great poem and a great song, do you recall the tv show that ol’ Ed Bruce was in back in the 80’s? A Western, of course. I believe he was a town sheriff. Thank you very kindly for speaking so well of me here pard, I hope that I’m worthy! If I ever sit a saddle headed back into Colorado mountain country I’ll definitely let ya know fer sure. I’d love to sit a spell, chew the fat, have a cup of coffee and conversation with you my pal, keep your back to the wind, and your in the saddle. Happy trails
