U F O In Smalltown U S A

Four girls from church were walking home
one dark and lonely night
when suddenly they all were bathed
in some bright eerie light!

The weird light came from up above,
and hanging in the sky,
a silent craft just hovered there
like some big glaring eye.

This thing instilled great fear in them;
they hugged each other, screamed - -
as this craft just was sitting there,
forever, so it seemed.

After a while, it sped away
and didn't make a sound,
just disappeared into the sky
and never more was found.

The girls ran to the nearest house
and blurted out their tale,
but few believed, and they soon learned
that silence should prevail.

This was in nineteen fifty-five;
some doubt the tale - - not I.
Two of those girls are still alive;
my sister doesn't lie.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My sister and her friends did not call the craft a 'U F O'. I don't believe that term was in general use at the time, at least not known to us. Of course, you know that U F O stands for Unidentified Flying Object. It was not unidentified to them. They identified it as a flying saucer! We grew up in a small town which at the time had a population of 177. Everybody in town knew everybody else. There was one church, a two-room school, one small store with one gas pump, no paved roads and no traffic lights. Sixty-five years later, the school and the store are gone, some of the roads are paved, but there are still no traffic lights. The population is five or six hundred and something. Kim, A moment in time that will last forever. As vivid today as then. Frozen in fear, unable to run. To my Poem List.

Member: Bharati Nayak Comment: When I was in school I had read a book on UFO.In that book the writer had narrated stories of some people seeing some UFO (A Disc like flying objects in the sky) I had enjoyed the book and quite believed the stories.In such cases one can not give proof. But I have a question in mind- why such UFOs are no more visible? Oh, Dear Bharati, but they are! These sightings are still being reported often!

I imagine that a lot more people than care to admit have seen, heard, felt and otherwise experienced things that they cannot explain to themselves much less others by referencing any documented " fact" but when US fighter pilots and astronauts have seen things in the sky that are very strange I think we should keep our minds open and... wonder.

There are still frontiers that mankind hasn't explored from horizon to horizon. Never say nay to another person's experience, and that does not make nay immediately a yea. We should sit back and examine and... wonder!
