Would You Rather Be Safe, Or Free? Poem by Practicing Poetess

Would You Rather Be Safe, Or Free?

Rating: 5.0

Would you rather be safe, or free?
I know what my answer would be.
You're safe in prison, under lock and key,
But that existence would never suit me.

I cannot be confined,
For chains will never bind
Free-spirits, and their kind.
You can't restrain my mind.

I would choose freedom - no one to tell me what to feel or write! A 10

I would hate to be in prison, under lock and key, like you. I like to think I am a free spirit too.

Michael, I loved the way your comment rhymed! When poetry's in your blood, it shows itself even in rhyming comments!

My budgie leaves no doubt he would rather be safe My dogs of the past leave no doubt they would rather be safe My only cat was free and left no question In my case freedom would have to be defined. good question

Thanks, Wes, for replying. A caged bird is safe, but not free. Cats definitely choose freedom. Funny, but I expected the dogs would, too. Freedom is what the military fights for. If it's worth sacrificing for, then it's worth it!

I'd rather be both but if I had to choose.... freedom is the only way to go. I wish I had always realized that.

Great comment! I'd rather be both, too, but I don't think we fully understand until we're older, how important freedom is. Back before the 1990's, Communist Russia was safe due to the police always on the streets, but the people had no freedom for 70 years due to Communism. Freedom brings its own challenges, but it still is preferable to having no choices.
