प्यार ने आकर वनदेवी से मांगा ऐसा फूल (तोरू दत्त)
प्यार ने आकर वनदेवी से मांगा ऐसा फूल
ऐसा फूल जो निस्संदेह ही सब फूलों का राजा हो
लिली और गुलाब सदा से इसी बात पर लड़ते थे
कि उन दोनों में श्रेष्ठ कौन है. बड़े बड़े कवियों ने भी
उनके दावों पर लिखा है. गुलाब में वैसी बात नहीं है
जो है पीत लिली में.. जैसे स्वर्ग से उतरी हो..
‘पर क्या लिली सबसे बढ़कर है? ' इस प्रकार दोनों फूलों के
प्रशंसकों ने (क्यूपिड की मित्र) साईकी की बैठक में यह बात रखी
‘मुझे फूल इक ऐसा दो जो गुलाब जैसे रस व गंध से युक्त हो
और जो लिली की तरह राजसी व गरिमामय हो'
‘परंतु उसका रंग कैसा हो? ' ‘गुलाब सा लाल' प्यार ने पहले सोचा
फिर निवेदन किया ‘नहीं, लिली सा सफ़ेद या फिर दोनों की खूबियों से युक्त'
और वनदेवी फ्लोरा ने उसको कमल का फूल दिया जिसमें ‘गुलाब की लाली भी थी
और जो लिली जैसा श्वेत भी था और राजसी तेज व स्वाभिमान से युक्त भी था.

Love came to Flora asking for a flower
That would of flowers be undisputed queen,
The lily and the rose, long, long had been
Rivals for that high honor. Bards of power
Had sung their claims. 'The rose can never tower
Like the pale lily with her Juno mien' -
'But is the lily lovelier? ' Thus between
Flower-factions rang the strife in Psyche's bower.
'Give me a flower delicious as the rose
And stately as the lily in her pride' -
But of what color? ' - 'Rose-red, ' Love first chose,
Then prayed - 'No, lily-white - or, both provide; '
And Flora gave the lotus, 'rose-red' dyed,
And 'lily-white' - the queenliest flower that blows.
A fascinating poem, so beautifully translated into Hindi by you, Rajnish ji. First time, i heard of a rivalry between Rose and Lily. Both of them are perfect in their own way but undoubtedly, 'The Lotus' is the queen among the flowers. Congratulations both to you and Toru dutt for this delightful poem......5 Stars and more!

The competition among lily and rose ends at last when Flora gives lotus cleverly and it is the dignity of the poet. You have so brilliantly translated it.
