Vincent Van Gogh 33 - Reading Books Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Vincent Van Gogh 33 - Reading Books

Rating: 5.0

Even though Vincent felt
Completely dejected, demotivated
With life, God, people, situations;
Yet, there was something
That kept him alive and going.
It was ‘Books'!
Vincent loved reading books.
He could read for hours on end,
And thoroughly enjoy delving deep
Into various characters and their stories.

For a lover of books time passes
With much interest, information, intrigue!
Books keep you engaged, engrossed,
Carrying you into an exciting world
Of curious and captivating characters.
Though Vincent was lonely,
Books made up for the lack
Of friends and relatives.
Vincent was so immersed in his books
That he did not notice the summer passing by.

When weather was pleasant,
Vincent would go into the open fields,
Read his book with breeze blowing over him,
And spend the whole day reading
With the glow of sun sprinkled over him.
On rainy days, he would stay indoors,
Reading his book lying on the bed,
Or seated in a chair in the warm kitchen.
He loved reading about ordinary folks like himself
Who worked tirelessly but succeeded only a little.

Reading books helped Vincent
To improve his mental condition,
From a state of recurring thoughts
That echoed ‘I am a failure' constantly.
He was in search of a new path,
To find a new direction in life,
In pursuit of happiness and joy,
A wish for success, accomplishment,
A way of life that is fulfilling and giving,
A contribution that would be a reward in itself!

I was so happy to hear that Generation X has discovered the value, and pleasure, of reading great literature. And are actually buying those books with their hard-earned money! Another gem of a poem, Geeta!

I can understand the situation in which Vincent was placed. Sure, books are one's best friends. I have hardly ever felt lonely, if I was in company of books. Geeta's narration is so captivating that we often come back to read the earlier episodes and it is hard to wait for the next issue.

Oh how I can relate to van Gogh's reoccurring thought of failure, he was probably the greatest painter of his generation. A well written poem Geeta.
