The paintings of Vincent Van Gogh,
In the earlier part of his life in Holland, till 1885,
Expressed the life and struggle of the daily workers.
Vincent's feelings for the poor and the underprivileged
Were translated into his canvas most vividly and passionately.
Vincent had an empathetic heart and he spent hours and days
Trying to capture the emotion and the work of the labourers,
His brush strokes proclaimed ‘realism'- the truth of life!
Vincent continued to paint the countryside of Brabant,
Living away from his parents and managing on his own.
In March, Vincent's father Theodorus, walked a long distance in the heath to visit a sick parishioner. He fell down on the steps of the parsonage. By the time, the family was informed and Anna rushed to her father, he had passed away. They buried him in the garden behind the church.Theo reached in time for the funeral and later, spent time with Vincent. They discussed their family and their respective work.
Theo invited Vincent, once again, to live with him in Paris.
Vincent was eager to join his brother at the earliest.
But he needed to complete his paintings of Brabant rural life.
Vincent wrote to Theo: " I feel the power of colour in me
while painting that I did not possess before, a sensation
of length and breadth. It gives me such scope,
It enables me to see effects that were unattainable before -
Just those which after all appeal to me most.
"Painting gives me light on different questions of tone,
Form and materials, before which I have upto now
Stood helpless. There is in painting something infinite.
I cannot explain to you so well. But for expressing
One's impression, it is so delightful.
There are in colours hidden effects of harmony or contrast
That involuntarily combine to work together, and which would
Not be possible if used in another way."
A Biographical Poem
An artist who can capture and reflect in a canvas with utmost passion the truth of life and expressed emotion on such art is a unique and great artist.
Here, in this episode, Vincent loses his father. But there is Theo who understands him and supports him. Theo is a great brother who understands the predicament of an artist…and supports his brother throughout.
Your familiarity with Vincent's letters allows you to choose quotations that reveal his creative process.
Beautifully and insightfully brought forth with great passion for the subject. Well done madam
Re 'Theo reached in time for the funeral...', I THINK a 'was' would be useful in front of 'reached'. I plan to return later to comment more. : )
Geeta, I hope you are NOT a poet who has requested that I NOT mention my 'negative thoughts' about a poem in my poem comments! ! ! (cont.)
Oops (of mine) , maybe V'v dad WAS walking in the vegetation called 'heath' or on/in a parcel of 'uncultivated land' called a 'heath'.
I concur with Poet Denis Mair comments. Your familiarity with Vincent's letter is significant in crafting this wonderful series on Van Gogh. Another very interesting and informative write, my friend, Dr. Geeta.
This poem has not been translated into any other language yet.
I would like to translate this poem
' There is in painting something infinite '. A powerful sentiment and great words from a wonderful artist.
