Yoga 13 - Rediscover Your Self Through Yoga Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Yoga 13 - Rediscover Your Self Through Yoga

Rating: 5.0

Yoga is not just about
Stretching your hands and legs,
Bending your upper torso and lower torso,
Twisting your arms and shoulders,
Or standing on one leg!

Yoga is much more than
Improving your body shape,
Toning your muscles,
Increasing the flexibility.
Or holding the body in various postures!

Yoga is beyond physical training and fitness,
Yoga is the control of your mental afflictions,
Yoga is self-awareness, self-discipline and self-control,
Yoga is about living a virtuous, holistic life of goodness,
Yoga is all about rediscovering your own pure self.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Most people think that Yoga is a kind of body training technique. But Patanjali's Yoga Sutras - the oldest and most authoritative text, clearly states that Yoga is a powerful technique to improve the mind. When the body is purified and made healthy through the Asanas or varied postures, it leads to a strong mind. The ultimate goal of Yoga is to develop into a pure and powerful soul.
21st June is declared as the International Yoga day.

You have said it in the last stanza, what yoga is. Comprehensively the term includes eight-fold aspects, ashtaanga, if observed fully. The result, if so, would be much more than the sum total of the eight aspects, synergy will come into effect and the life would be holistic. The ultimate aim of yoga is kaivalyam, not even the siddhis that come with yoga.

The poem sets things about the idea and philosophy of Yoga in the right perspective and clears misconceptions in this regard, that too, in simple terms. Through Yoga, a man attains full control on his body and mind by being healthy and strong. From then on 'The ultimate goal of Yoga is to develop into a pure and powerful soul' and attain salvation. Thanks, Geeta ji, for this lovely poem on the occasion of World Yoga Day.

Another beautiful poem by Geeta. Yoga is such an integrating force and brings so many spiritual states through Namaste and Shavasana. Important poem that is a great theme. Well done by Dr. Radhakrishna!
