In many ethnic cultures (including most Indian) women wearing anklets is regarded as symbolic of their marital status. It indicates that she is married, so as to forewarn men from making advances to her. In some cultures, anklets are nuptial gifts to her from the groom/husband. Thus, the embrace of the anklets on her ankles are actually her lover’s embrace. This is, in my opinion, the significance of the marvellous imagery of the poem. Great! Loved it.
