Father! I Am Leaving Your Place

Rating: 5.0

This is a popular poem written by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah about 130 years ago. Rajnish Manga has tried his best to translate it into English.

बाबुल मोरा, नैहर छूटो ही जाए
बाबुल मोरा, नैहर छूटो ही जाए
Father! I am leaving your place
Father! I am leaving your place

चार कहार मिल, मोरी डोलिया सजावें
मोरा अपना बेगाना छुटो जाए
बाबुल मोरा...
Four bearers spruce up my palanquin
All my own and unknown depart without trace
Father! I am leaving your place

अंगना तो पर्बत भयो और देहरी भयी बिदेश
ले बाबुल घर आपना मैं चली पिया के देश
बाबुल मोरा...
Courtyard's amountain and thy door is an isle
Away from you, father! I go to my husband's place
Father! I am leaving your place

बाबुल मोरा, नैहर छूटो ही जाए
बाबुल मोरा, नैहर छूटो ही जाए
Father! I am leaving your place
Father! I am leaving your place

Note: Wajid Ali Shah (30 July 1822 - 1 September 1887) was the tenth and last Nawab of Awadh- A princely state in Northern India. He held this position for 9 years, from 1847 to 1856. During British rule, Awadh was annexed by the then Governor General Lord Dalhousie and the Nawab was exiled to Calcutta (now Kolkata) . It was then that Wajid Ali Shah composed this poem. Besides being a poet, he was a dancer (Kathak) and a singer who popularised THUMRI style of light classical music.

The original poem doesn't appear to be in Hindi. Your translation must be good, for it is sweet. Nice work Rajnish. Much informative also. Thanks for sharing 10+

Sorry for being late in my reply. The original poem was in Hindustani written in Urdu script as per the practice prevailing during those days of Nawabs. Later, it popularised through Devanagari (Hindi) . .

Wajid Ali Shah sounds like a fascinating person: a poet, a dancer, and a singer! Very talented!

Translating this deep, emotional piece of poetry seems very difficult. But Manga sir has very beautifully translated this timeless work. Both the versions weigh equally on the reader.
