Guru is a word of great significance.
Gu is darkness while Ru is removal of darkness.
Guru is the one who removes darkness of ignorance,
And fills the mind with light of knowledge.
Guru is the torch that leads you through
A glorious path of light and wisdom.
Interesting information.... in the Philippines, a Teacher is called a Guro, a term probably influenced by the Sanskrit word when there was a trade route that prospered between India, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, before the Spaniards came in 1521.
Guru is the torch... absolute truth dear madam. Appreciated this truthful write. Full marks.
The meaning of Guru is well illustrated. I quote...Guru is the one who removes darkness of ignorance, And fills the mind with light of knowledge. Dear madam, you have taken a nice step on Guru. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Geeta! I’ve known this word for years but had yet to look up it’s etymology. Now I know. Again, thank you! -Glen
Highly meaningful and inspiring. We never analyzed the meaning of a Guru so precisely. So very true- Guru is the one who removes darkness of ignorance. Thanks a lot, Geeta ji.
Part 2 Uttishtata, jagrata, praapyavaraam nibodhata’ says the scriptures. As Geeta narrates in the poem, Guru is that power who removes the darkness (of ignorance, and all the vices) from the mind of the disciple. May I request her to throw more light on this concept.

‘Guru’ is a concept which appears in every Indian scripture and epic, with great importance. Guru is not just a teacher, he is a person who is capable of transforming the child into a noble human being. His place is above God: Mata, pita, guru, Daivam’ is the order of reverence. ‘Guru sakshat para brahmam ‘ is a valid definition. ‘
