Poem Hunter 11 - Ode To Classic Poets Of Poem Hunter - William Wordsworth 1

Rating: 5.0

My bonding with the poems
Of the Great Nature Poet,
William Wordsworth,
Began from school days.
The bonding was such that
I began to appreciate Nature
Through his beautiful words, verses
And his exquisite poems on Nature!

In school, I loved reciting the poem
"The Daffodils"!
" I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze."

I must have repeated these lines
Innumerable number of times!
Strange it might seem, but
When I began learning Mohiniattam
While staying in Kochi in Kerala,
The first thing that struck me was
That I was dancing on the lines of
Wordsworth's poem.

Just as Daffodil's danced
In the fields of Lake district of England;
I always felt the style of Mohiniattam
Resembled the sway of the coconut branches,
And the bubbling backwaters of the exotic land of Kerala.
Everything differed, geography, language, culture!
Where was Kerala and where was Lake district? Yet,
Underlying it all, was a deep love, a link of dance and nature.

These were thoughts that entered my mind,
That I dare not disclose it to my teacher of Mohiniattam.
She was a pure traditionalist and a strong Keralite.
She would not have ever agreed with me
Had I told her about William Wordsworth.
For many years, I kept these thoughts like a secret,
The strong resemblance of dance and nature. Finally,
I poured my feelings through my pen into my of book.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is the picture of William Wordsworth's house in Rydal Mount in Lake District of England. I visited this place with my daughter Radhika in 1997, when we were on a tour of dance performances in England. We were taken to see the Poet's house by a kind hearted lady named Dr.Thilli Sinathiraja. It was a wonderful drive, most memorable.

Wonderful introspective soliloquy, reiterating the fact that nature as also human perceptions about it's colorful manifestations are more or less same through out the universe. Demography, dialect and local conditions may give them just opposite shapes but in reality their essence is the same.. Thanks for sharing.10 points.

Thank you for sharing with us more about your experience of dance and the secrets you kept form your teacher. Although the teacher might have understood, your experience of keeping a secret cultivated more power in you to create expressions replete with enigma and mystery. Wonderful story! Set as a poem!

(1) Most of us would swear by the name of great poets like that of William Wordsworth and could recall their poems read in our schools or colleges but there may not be many who have been so intensely influenced by these poems.

(2) So much so that this love was reflected in all their pursuits, be it professional or otherwise. Your bonding with their classical poetry has really been portrayed quite honestly and with humility. This is a very rare trait. Thank you so much, Geeta ji. This Ode is again a masterpiece.

I share your admiration of William Wordsworth, the poet of the Lake District and much more. His narratives flow easily in the line length which he chose. Your poem resonates with me.
