The Essence Of Affair - Poem by Brendan Greene

Watching Desire,
this is a confession of forbidden love.
A letter to my lover.
The letter, my words on a page,
Our lust, my scattered seed upon her body.
Her womanliness, motherliness,
knows how to love me.
And us, outside of communion, we love.
The essence of affair:
Love will never be contained,
Now, though it may seem.
Love will never be contained,
and without containment
- constraint of definition -
will it be?
Or will it disappear with the resistance
- the containment -
to become nothing?
Like the words I wrote to you,
That went.
That died, so they will say.
Words that died to give birth to others.

The sacrifice of knowing
that love’s frustration
is her own definition.
