Thirteen (Trapped In Confusion) Poem by Practicing Poetess

Thirteen (Trapped In Confusion)

Rating: 5.0

Not yet a woman; no longer a girl,
Caught in a challenging, in-between world.
Too old for dolls; too young to go steady
Wondering if you'll ever be ready.

Up-and-down feelings that you can't predict
Locking yourself in your room, playing sick
Facial complexion's a broken-out mess,
When it will clear up, is anyone's guess.

Suddenly you have grown quite a bit taller
And the surrounding world feels a lot smaller.
Boys at school stare at your top, and they talk
You sense their eyes watching you when you walk.

Parents want you to act like an adult
Their expectations make you want to bolt.
Hang in there, Angel, and try not to fear,
Fourteen will be here, in less than a year.

It will get better, please take it from me.
I know; for once I was thirteen, you see.

Rebecca, thanks so very much! Aren't we glad those days are behind us? I know I am! BTW, as I previously commented, that is not me in the picture. But I wanted a picture to go with the poem.

14? What's going to happen at 14? I'll tell you what's going to happen, she's going to go boy crazy and that's when the real craziness starts.

Crow, I am still laughing my head off over your comment- - not a mere ladylike giggle, but a deep belly- laugh! Someone give me oxygen, p-l-e-a-s-e ! ! Well, hm-m-m-m- - - you've got me thinking here. What's going to happen at 14 that's different from 13? High School. Making new friends. Maybe being on the cheeerleading squad. Perhaps some makeup to cover up the blemishes and pimples. Oh, what the heck- - This is only a POEM, right ? ;) Thanx for the laughter!

Too old for dolls; too young to go steady now she is ready to play and study. Caught in a challenging, in-between world she has grown up now like a moon grows to full moon. This is very tenderly and sweetly expressed poem. Excellent rhyming motivates mind to read this again and again.10

LOL! C'mon, Hannah, we outgrew & left all that behind years ago (didn't we?) Thankfully, there's usually only one year out of life when you go through that Ugly Duckling stage before the Swan emerges. BTW, the photo is not of me. But she looked the part of the angst-ridden 13-year-old, so I chose her! Thanks for the positive comment!
