Tolstoy On Love Poem by Esther Leclerc

Tolstoy On Love

Rating: 5.0

Tolstoy wrote that youthful love, when
first it appears,
Holds one hostage to many fears:

'In being myself, will I seem
ridiculous?
What if I come off as fatuous? '

In maturity, Tolstoy believed
First thoughts are thus:
'Love fills my soul with joy rapturous! '

As time moves we look forward, hoping
When it appears,
Love will not find us bound by our fears.

Self-consciousness plagues young lovers
With time to waste...
Older ones know to savor love's taste.

What a finely penned poem about a wonderful man and a timeless truth. I can attest to the accuracy of his philosophy - from personal and passionate experience. love, Allie xxxx

Thank you for the interesting thought. A gracefully-turned poem. Tolstoi was a passionate soul, and good for him. I enjoyed this very much. - Will

Esther, this is an exceptional write, you have touched on Tolstoy's varying perspectives on love at different stages with such eloquence. A thoughtfully composed piece that speaks volumes. Justine

Love, sweet love! Tolstoy and you know what you are talking about. I think it is great when us older folk (that would be me and Tolstoy, not you) remember what it was like to be young. The rhyme scheme here is great, and that makes the whole thing work so well. Good joy, Essemee!

Esther, Are you telling us that as people get older, they get smarter about love ? Is that the way it is on your planet ?

Pleased I tripped over this one, Esther! Guilty as charged! Too much time weighing up the why's and wherefore's, and not enough attention paid to the realities and therefore's. That guy knew a bit about love, didn't he...and so do you :) Time marches on... Hugz jack :)
