A Lesson Of Life (True Sacrifice) Poem by Ahmad Shiddiqi

A Lesson Of Life (True Sacrifice)

Rating: 4.3

(dedicated to Ms. Diana Damrau, a great soprano)

Prophet Abraham was instructed to bring
his wife, Hagar, and their child Ishmael to Arabia
in his dreams, Abraham was command by Allah
to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah

the devil tempted Abraham by saying
he should disobey Allah and spare his son
then Abraham asked to his wife, and his son
Ishmael and Hagar asked him to obey Allah's command

as Abraham was about to sacrifice his son
Allah intervened and instead provided a lamb as sacrifice
today all over world, Muslims who have to sacrifice an animal
as a reminder of Abraham's willingness to Allah

as a commemoration of the command give by Allah
to Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael to Allah
the fulfillment of this noble command of Allah
by Abraham signifies his faith in Allah

in an open space
a fresh start of the day
wear their nicest clothing
attend Eid Prayer in morning

congregational prayers to Allah
occasion to pray to Allah
and to glorify Allah's name
remembrance of Allah's favors

the needy and vulnerable in society are
also remembered by showing them
sympathy and consolation
people visit each other's homes

partake in festive meals with
special dishes, beverages, desserts
children receive gifts and sweets
on this happy occasion

the feast of commitment
obedience, self-sacrifice to Allah
who can afford to do so
offer domestic animals

usually sheep, and goat
as a symbol of Abraham's sacrifice
some of the meat is given to the poor
the rest is shared among family, friends

a time when pray for forgiveness
from Allah and strength of faith
they release any feelings of enmity or ill feeling
also exchange greeting cards at this time

Truly indeed a sacrifice, a divine commemoration of our biblical history regardless of religion. As of today, we have true sacrifices also in our life, in our own little way of giving, sharing, surrendering to HIS greatness is a noble thing to do, a divine act in our time. a10/10 for this AS
