Manu's Varna Poem by Samanyan Lakshminarayanan

Manu's Varna

Rating: 5.0

The colour and creed - that
Manu gave
Set rules - put one above the other-
to bring in some order -
it will help people to live together
Manu said.

Varnas there were four
The thinker, The fighter, The seller and The toiler.
The head, The body, The abdomen and the foot.
The co-ordination between the four - did it
give the real colour to life.

Even great people like the 'Mahatma' and 'bharathiar' -
were 'FOR' the Varnas
The discrimination they accepted- any
inhuman aspect in it they rejected.

Bharathiar would say 'Living within the varna-
marrying within it- would emancipate man sooner'
Mahatma would say -
' A handed down profession is always better'.

Even in todays India- where the
broad four is no more relevent-
where everybody is stepping into any shoe available.
Even in todays India- after ages-
The colour instead of fading has darkened.

The money can come from anywhere-but-
The distinctness in their birth they would'nt spare.
Manu's varna was just a pattern-after all
Everybody has a head, body, abdomen and a foot.
Manu's varna was just a pattern - mind you-
It was'nt the 'Rainbow'

(manu was a saint who brought in classification of people into the indian soceity)

a great write. A well attempted interpretation of a part of Manusmriti. It is the first ever example of what we call today as specialization or the division of labour in the economic history of the world. I have a page on Yahoo 360 and my first blog there briefly dealt with this theme. But people seem to have lost interest in such themes so I switched on to poetry later. I enjoyed reading your composition. CP

such well defined structure we have, unfortunately exploited to the advatage of a few...resulting in one hating and suspecting the other!

dear narayan, gandhi was a poor practicioner of Gita...which resuled in the division of bharat...he didn't understand the true content of gita until he met sri narayana guru from kerala... i am sure until his death gandhi was not aware of the true essance of gita...

yeah..the Purusha Sukhta says also propagates the Varnashrama Dharma.(brAhmano mukhamAsIthu, bAhu rAjanya....) ..unfortunately, we cling to the varna and not the Dharma....a question raised by Arjuna in the Gita....

A very commendable piece Samanyan..you have sought to put Manu's Varma into perspective...unfortunately what was a good start a 1000 years ago has now been murdered by self-serving individuals and politicians...10++

Reference to 4 varnas was there much earlier to Manu. Purusha Suktam of Vedas had mention of varnas: 'Brahmanasya mukhamaaseeth Baahu Rajanya kruthaha OOru Thadasyaya Vyshyaha Padbhyagum Shudro Ajayatha' Reference to 4 varnas is available in Bhratha, Vishnu Sahasranamam etc. too. Manu was a great exponent of Vedas and his Manu Smrithi (Like Yagnavalka Smrithi and Narada Smrithi) was a commentary on Vedas, especially the societal structure of the country. As you rightly observed in this good poem, in spite of all modern slogans, we cannot shake of differences amongst humans based on their abilities and characteristic features. (Lord Krishna said Chatur varnam maya strushtam Guna karma vibhagaye Very well done Sir. A bold attempt. My heartfelt appreciation.
