Square Poems 26: Fifty Years Of Marriage

She is the best thing in my life;
Without her I'm completely lost.
I am referring to my wife;
Together bridges we have crossed.

For fifty years now we've been wed;
How she survived it, I don't know.
I am the weirdest dunderhead
Of all God's creatures here below.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This week my wife and I are celebrating our fiftieth wedding anniversary. How she has put up with me all these years, I'll never know, but I'm grateful that she has. She's a marvelous woman.

I call these square poems because they have the same number of syllables per line as there are lines in the poem. For example, a four-line poem would have four syllables per line, and a six-line poem would have six syllables per line.

This poem has eight lines, so it has eight syllables per line. To me, the eight by eight square poem is the perfect size, because eight by eight is also the size of the chessboard, and chess is the perfect game.

Square poems do not have to rhyme, and they do not have to be acrostics. Many of my recent square poems have also been acrostics, but this one is not.

(I told my wife the day I wrote this that I had written a poem about this occasion, and asked if she knew where our wedding picture was so that I could post it with the poem. She thought she might know, but we have both been so busy tending our great-grandson and doing other things that we haven't really had time to look for it, until today.)

On December 17 1966 she offered you all this and you took it and ran you greedy pig. I am just as guilty on May 29th 1954 Duplicity in crime is not all that bad. Congratulations kids. It is okay to be bored out of your skull with one another for short periods of time. Snuggle and be content.
