Vedas 50 - Kathopanishad - Part 6 B - Know Brahman Before You Die Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Vedas 50 - Kathopanishad - Part 6 B - Know Brahman Before You Die

Rating: 4.0

Yama strongly emphasises:
"Listen, O Nachiketaa!
It is of utmost importance for a man
To gain the knowledge of
The Supreme Brahman,
Before he perishes.
If man has elevated his mind
With the Truth of Brahman
During his life time,
Then, he is liberated from
The bondage of life, death and transmigration."

"Just as you see your image crystal clear
In a polished mirror,
So, should you be able to identify yourself
With the Pure Consciousness within you.
Beyond the senses is the mind,
Beyond the mind is the intellect,
Beyond the intellect is the soul,
Beyond the individual mind, intellect and soul
Is Brahman or the Purusha,
The Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnipresent
The Great Universal Soul! "

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Kathopanishad is the most popular of the Upanishads. It elucidates the story of a young boy named Nachiketaa, who goes to meet Yama - the God of Death. The dialogue between Nachiketaa - the brave young boy and Yama - the Ruler of Death, forms the essential feature of Kathopanishad.
The dialogue between Nachiketaa and Yama, though long, is very interesting and absorbing. The dialogue spreads over six chapters or sections containing 119 verses. Chapter 1 - 29 verses, Chapter 2 - 25 verses, Chapter 3 - 17 Verses, Chapter 4 - 15 verses, Chapter 5- 15 verses and Chapter 6 - 18 verses.
This is the sixth or the last part of Kathopanishad.
Each Upanishad should be read from the beginning and in order of the Series, specially Kathopanishad, which is illustrated through a story.Otherwise, neither the story or the essence of the Upanishad will be understood. It would be difficult to grasp the philosophy of the Upanishad.

The philosophy of life and death is never ending, we in human forms, keep guessing and our wonderful brains stretches its wings to soar the heights of humanity, far far to the unknown terrains but alas, the fuel is limited to scale the heights, I doubt whether someone will be able to reach those heights? A thought provoking series ended nicely enlightening all of us, thanks Geeta ji for this wonderful work.

I take it as a metaphor, a Brahman made of Brahma's brain means a man who has the maximum knowledge of the mysteries of this universe.

The whole concept of attaining true knowledge of Brahman elevates the mind of a seeker to a level of pure consciousness to be one with Brahman who is 'Beyond the individual mind, intellect and soul'. Thanks, Geeta ji. This Part 6B of the series is a great pleasure to read. I would like to quote: Then, he is liberated from The bondage of life, death and transmigration.
