Flower 10 - Neelakurinji- The Purple Blue Flowers Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Flower 10 - Neelakurinji- The Purple Blue Flowers

Rating: 4.5

Neelakurinji! Neelakurinji!
The purple blue flowers!
That blooms on the serene hills of Munnar,
Indefatigable mountains of Western Ghats.

Incredible flowers that appear once, in twelve years!
Both Nature and Man wait with eagerness,
For the arrival of Neelakurinji to spread
And spring its mesmerising splendour.

Standing atop these breezy hills,
Sight of breath-taking -' Kunthiana'
The sensational flowers that dance in your heart,
Singing a song of purple blue melody.

I watched the sprightly dance of the windy mountains,
Standing, Stretching, turning, twirling,
Spreading, sprawling along the Munnar hills, Then,
I danced too, along with the magical, purple blue flowers!

Edited. A poem of four verses with four lines each.

Flower 10 - Neelakurinji- The Purple Blue Flowers
POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Neelakurinji is a flower that blooms, once in twelve years, on the hills of Western ghats. I went for a holiday to Munnar with my husband and daughter in 2007, when these flowers bloomed. It was a wonderful sight. This year, there was great expectation from Nature and Flower lovers, all over the world to see Neelakurinji bloom. About 8 lakhs tourists were expected in Kerala, to see these flowers from July to October. But Nature has its own plans. The rains lashed and flooded Munnar that hampered the flowering of Neelakurinji. The botanical name for Neelakurinji is " Strobilanthes Kunthiana" .

Part - 4 blue windy mountains! From 2007 to 2019 it has been completed twelve years and it was expected to enjoy blooming of Neelakurinji flowers during July to October but it is a matter of regret that rains lashed and flooded Munnar that hampered the flowering of Neelakurinji.

Nature has any number of hidden treasures. Neelakurinji, flowering only once in twelve years, imparting a wonderful hue to the entire Nilgiris is one such treasure. Man is already encroaching her habitat and it may not be long before she also feels the heat...
